Paediatric Dermatology

Skin problems in children and adolescents

What is Paediatric Dermatology?

Paediatric dermatology deals with skin problems in children and adolescents. Many of these conditions are quite different from adult skin problems and require special expertise.

Skin diseases are common. These conditions can lead to itch, infection, or poor growth. Many skin problems can lead to poor self-esteem. If you have any problems with your skin, first see your general practitioner. Often they will be able to clear your skin. If not, they may suggest you come and see Dr Rod Phillips for management.

COMMON PAEDIATRIC CONDITIONS MANAGED BY PAEDIATRIC SKIN SPECIALISTS:

  • Eczema
  • Acne and other adolescent skin problems
  • Birthmark: e.g. strawberry birthmarks (haemangiomas)

  • Infections: e.g. molluscum, warts and fungal infections
  • Anogenital skin problems: e.g. lichen sclerosis, phimosis
  • Psoriasis

THE INITIAL ASSESSMENT

Dr Phillips will meet with you and your parents. Your assessment will involve a detailed history and examination. Sometimes, a blood test or skin test might be necessary. Dr Phillips will then work with you to develop a management plan that suits you. Our aim is to get your skin back to normal. This can be achieved in most patients.
