What is Paediatric Haematology?

Paediatric Haematology is a sub speciality of paediatrics focusing on blood disorders.

There are many blood disorders that are unique to children and other blood disorders that occur in both children and adults.

Common disorders that paediatric haematologists care for include:

  • Assessment and investigation of the child with easy bruising
  • Investigation of a familial bleeding disorder;
    pre-operative work up.
  • Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP)
  • Management of von Willebrand’s disorder
  • Anaemia in children – diagnostic and management problems

  • Assessment of neutropenia and lymphopenia in children
  • Thrombocytopenia in neonates
  • Thromboembolic disease in children
  • Prothrombotic abnormalities
  • Transfusion issues
