Background and experience
Dr Katherine Chen completed her specialist training in Melbourne at the Royal Children’s Hospital and Monash Medical Centre network in 2011. She undertook further clinical fellowship training at The Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne and University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire, United Kingdom. Katherine is undertaking her PhD at the University of Melbourne and Murdoch Childrens Research Institute investigating the impact of early life inflammation on the development of cardiovascular disease.
Katherine currently works as a general paediatrician at The Royal Children’s Hospital. She has had broad training and experiences in the management of a wide range of acute, developmental and chronic illnesses. She enjoys working in a multi-disciplinary partnership with families, general practitioners, allied health professionals and educators to help children reach their full potential.
Katherine adopts a holistic approach, in which communication is central to her practice. She aims to empower families and children to take ownership of their health. Having grown up in Taiwan and Indonesia, Katherine appreciates and enjoys learning how culture shapes each individual child’s health.
As part of her PhD, Katherine is investigating the immunological susceptibility determinants and long term vascular health of children who have had Kawasaki disease, viral myocarditis and toxic shock syndrome. Katherine is also a member of the Royal Australasian College of Physician’s working group on the development of a communication training program for fellows and trainees.
